The post office in the Appanoose County town of Moulton was established in March 1868 with Jacob Neal appointed as the first postmaster. For nearly a century, the post office has been located in the eastern part of a two-story pressed brick building located along Main Street in downtown Moulton. The building was constructed in 1902 at a cost of $14,000 for use as the State Savings Bank, which occupied the west wing of the facility. After the bank closed its doors during the Great Depression, the building was sold at public auction and has since seen various occupants in portions previously occupied by the bank, including dentists, doctors and lawyers.
The building caught on fire in December 1940, but the post office escaped mostly unscathed. Nonetheless, it was relocated to the west section of the building while repairs were made. The full-time office is one of 9 active Post Offices in Appanoose County.
Constructed in 1856, the Unionville United Methodist Church is thought to be the oldest active church building in Appanoose County in southeastern Iowa. The site to construct the church caused early controversy, as two pieces of ground were donated, on opposite sides of town. The oak and walnut timbers were discretely moved multiple times between the locations before the east side location was settled upon. The church shares a pastor with the United Methodist Church in nearby Cincinnati.
In 1906, the growing First National Bank of Moulton moved to a brand new building on the west side of the town’s Main Street. Constructed in a quasi-Greek Revival style, the facility served the community for two decades before the bank was shuttered. In 1936, a group of Moulton businessmen requested the Davis County Savings Bank of Bloomfield investigate opening a branch in the unused building. A charter was granted and the Davis County Savings Bank began its Moulton operation the same year.
The historic bank office has been unoccupied since 2005, when Davis County Savings Bank (now known as Success Bank) constructed a modern facility across the street.
