The post office in the Taylor county seat of Bedford was originally established as Grove on June 30, 1855, with Adam Vinnedge named postmaster. The name Bedford was officially adoopted on June 24, 1856. Rural delivery service was established in 1901, while city delivery began in 1927. Service began in the current post office building on Labor Day 1964. In March 1965, the six-month-old facility was broken into and robbed of over $11,000 in stamps and cash. The thieves were later caught in Kansas City.
United Methodist Church (Colesburg, Iowa)
The United Methodist Church in the Delaware County town of Colesburg can trace its history to 1942, when services were held by Rev. Barney White and Rev. Simeon Clark in a nearby schoolhouse. A permanent church was constructed in the community in 1849 and served members until October 30, 1891, when the present building was dedicated.
A significant remodeling project was completed in 1983. During the renovations, which took place between August and December, services were held in the local Catholic Church.
Former Post Office 50612 (Buckingham, Iowa)
The Traer County town of Buckingham was one of 34 communities in the state of Iowa to lose its post office in 2011. Doors were closed for the last time on Friday, November 18, as the office was shuttered after 111 years of continuous operation. The 253-square-foot building was constructed specifically for post office use in 1959 by then-postmaster Roger Messerly.
Calvary Baptist Church (Greene, Iowa)
With the burden of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Butler County town of Greene, a Bible class was started in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Morey on July 16, 1939. Services were moved to the second floor of a local store in October 1940. The first permanent pastor, Charles E. Segerstom, was called to serve in 1944, with assistance of the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, and the Calvary moniker was formally adopted in June of that year.
Ground was broken for a permanent church building in August 1945. The first services were held on May 5, 1946, and a dedication ceremony was held on June 2. The present entryway was added in 1979.
United Methodist Church (Corning, Iowa)
The first record of a Methodist Church in the Adams County seat of Corning can be traced to 1868, when services were held on the second floor of the Bud and Crowley Hardware building. The first permanent church was constructed in 1871, with a large addition added in 1882. The building served members until 1908, when the decision was made to construct a new facility via a 20-2 vote by board members.
The church was built at a cost of $22,000 and was dedicated debt-free on January 9, 1910. A $5,000 Carnegie pipe organ was installed in 1913. An educational wing was added to the building in 1967.
