Former Federal Building (Fort Dodge, Iowa)

Former Federal Building (Fort Dodge, Iowa)

Constructed in 1959, the Federal Building in Fort Dodge was once home to a multitude of government services ranging from the Social Security Administration to the Mine Safety and Health Administration to the local U.S. Post Office. As chronicled in a 2009 article in the Fort Dodge Messenger, by the late 1990s the fourth floor was empty and third floor courtroom was rarely used.

The Post Office moved from the location in February 2007, rendering the former Federal Building empty. The building has changed hands twice in the last seven years, with each buyer hoping to revive the once-bustling buildings. The most recent plan to lease a first-floor coffee shop and multiple small business offices has fizzled.

Post Office 52534 (Beacon, Iowa)

Post Office 52534 (Beacon, Iowa)

The community of Beacon feels like a suburb to Oskaloosa, the county seat of Mahaska County in southeast Iowa. Along with nearby University Park, it’s one of two incorporated cities located just outside of the Oskaloosa city limits. Beacon’s a mostly residential town, save a construction business, Methodist Church, and the pictured Post Office. Postal service was established in Beacon in 1866; the location was known as Givin and Oskaloosa Junction before the Beacon name was established in April 1867.

Sunset Theatre (Sumner, Iowa)

Sunset Theatre (Sumner, Iowa)

After sitting vacant for many years, community members came together to revive the Sunset Theatre in Sumner, Iowa. A non-profit organization was formed, and with some help from a Vision Iowa grant in 2003, the theatre was fully restored and reopened. Originally dating to the 1940s, the single-screen theatre shows movies daily and has the ability to accommodate live performances.

Admission to movies is a mere 99 cents, likely the cheapest place to see a first-run show in the state. For current show times, visit the theatre website or call (563) 578-5307.

Former School (Wyman, Iowa)

Former School (Wyman, Iowa)

This three-story school opened to students in Wyman when three nearby one-room county schools were consolidated. Constructed in 1912 at a cost of $15,000, the red brick building served all grade levels of students for over forty years. The last high school class graduated from Wyman in 1956; the following year, further consolidation made the school part of the nearby Winfield-Mt. Union School District. Wyman School served as an elementary school until 1978.

Following the closure, the school went up for auction and was purchased by local businessman Keith Jones. Both alumni of Wyman High School, Keith and his wife Pat started a clothing business in the former school building on April Fool’s Day in 1980. The store originally focused on jeans and overalls, but quickly grew into a full-fleged family clothing store. Merchandise spread from classroom to classroom, and the store became a destination from customers across southeast Iowa.

Business at the Wyman Wearhouse wasn’t limited to Iowans: Pat noted she had sold clothing to visitors from around the United States and the world, from Alaska to Australia. The clothing store operated successfully for nearly two decades before the owners decided to retire and sell the former school in 1999. Sadly, in the last decade, the school building and surrounding grounds have fallen to a state of disrepair. Windows are broken or boarded, and overgrown shrubs and weeds surround the property.

Alumni and friends of the Wyman School held their 75th and final reunion banquet in July; with a aging and dwindling alumni population, the group decided this year’s reunion would be its last. Wyman is an unincorporated town located in the southwest corner of Louisa County; the county genealogical website features more information on the origin of the community and its school.

More Iowa Schools
In last Sunday’s Des Moines Register, Iowa columnist Kyle Munson highlighted a few of the former brick school buildings across the state. While many of these buildings stand vacant, others have been renovated and repurposed as homes, community centers, or businesses. Beyond the column, Munson is working on compiling an A-Z list of former schools across the state.

Grain Elevator (Pioneer)

Grain Elevator (Pioneer, Iowa)

Despite a dwindling residential population, the Humboldt County community of Pioneer is still a daily destination for area farmers doing business at the local Pro Coop office, which operates the pictured grain elevators. With a population of 21 as of the 2000 census, Pioneer is the third-smallest incorporated city in the state of Iowa. For more, check out this detailed town history of Pioneer.
