Road Trip: The Mixx

The Mixx (Kansas City, Missouri)

We’re looking forward to a trip to Kansas City this weekend to watch the Iowa State Women’s Basketball team play in the Big 12 Tournament.  Any out-of-town traveling offers opportunities for dining out, and this time out is no exception.  We’re planning on at least two meals at The Mixx, a dynamic restaurant serving serving well-prepared food composed of fresh ingredients in a comfortable and contemporary atmosphere.

Served with fresh bread, the “Mixx” salad is a safe bet for first-time visitors.  Amanda always goes for their salad, which is made-to-order and totally customizable.  Start with your choice of greens, whether it’s iceberg lettuce or wild field greens.  The greens are tossed in your choice of house dressings, including buttermilk ranch, creamy Gorgonzola, and a unique jalapeno lime vinaigrette.  Then, get creative with mix-ins, ranging from artichoke hearts to roasted yams to granny smith apples to hickory smoked apples.  A salad with three mix-ins is under $5; meat can be added for as little as $2 more.

Dinner Bell Restaurant

The Dinner Bell

Choosing a gas station restaurant as your meal destination is always a risky proposition, with food quality and atmosphere varying wildly from stop to stop.  There’s no risk, however, if you decide to stop at the Dinner Bell, which has featured delicious food and a friendly atmosphere for over fifty years.  Located just south of the Iowa border in Eagleville, Missouri, the Dinner Bell may be the best roadside restaurant between Des Moines and Kansas City.

While you can opt for the standard fried fare, I’d recommend looking at their daily specials or asking the wait staff about customer favorites, such as the hand-breaded tenderloins.  I went with one of the daily specials and was blown away by the taste of the egg noodles, served with beef and mashed potatoes and topped with homemade gravy.

Finally, don’t miss dessert, as their pies are made entirely from scratch.  Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Dinner Bell is highly recommended if you’re in the area or driving by.
