Corning, Iowa

You won’t find any big box stores or urban sprawl along the outskirts of Corning, Iowa. Instead you’ll find a quiet, caring community home to one of the best downtown districts in the state. With a variety of local restaurants, retailers, and even a movie theatre, there’s plenty to do for a day trip or weekend getaway.
With the holiday shopping season in full swing, you’re bound to find some great gifts at the downtown boutiques and shops. Purchase Iowa-made soy candles at Something Special, or peruse the Fickle Frog art gallery and gift store. Peterson Floral is worth a stop if you’re looking for fresh flowers or holiday decor.
One of the larger stores in downtown Corning is McMahon Drug, a drug and variety store featuring an old-fashioned soda fountain. There are only a handful of counter seats, but several circular tables provide ample seating in the Coca-Cola-themed fountain area. A little character is lost with their use of paper cups, but the pop and ice cream still taste delicious.
Beyond shopping and sodas, you’ll find several local restaurants in the downtown district. The most intriguing may be the Electric Burrito, a hip, new Mexican eatery open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday and all day on Saturdays. Cap your visit off with a stop at the American Theatre, which plays family-friendly movies nightly, along with a Sunday matinee.

You forgot to mention the Corning Center for the Fine Arts. We currently have two resident artists, a glass and silversmith and a painter from Washington DC. The CCFA has over 50 artists from across the country and features a wide variety of work – ceramics, paintings, woodworking, stained glass, jewelry, etc. Not to mention the classes offered and our annual En Plein Air art competition. Make sure you stop by and visit us next time you are in town!
